Lines in Porcelain: Vessels and Light

Lines in Porcelain: Vessels and Light is an exhibition of new work by award winning ceramicist Jo Davies, exploring the balance of simplicity and surprise using the material qualities of clay.

Jo Davies specialises in wheel-throwing – her practice includes making a fine porcelain design range, lighting and unique objects. The enjoyment of the making process and the continuing development of an evolving creativity are what drives her practice. Most days are spent at her studio where there is an inevitable deepening of her knowledge and skill.

Creating a balance of simplicity and surprise is the first priority in Jo Davies’ work, forming connections between object and audience by making shapes that appear soft and inviting to touch, as if they might still be wet clay rather than fired ceramic. This ‘trick’ is intended to enhance their sense of movement as well as the traces of the human figure, and human hand, in their making.

As a Royal College of Art graduate, she exhibits internationally and has worked with, amongst others, the National Portrait Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Somerset House, Heals and the National Trust. Her practice has also been supported by the Crafts Council and Arts Council, and is based at The Chocolate Factory Studios in Stoke Newington, East London.
